My Story
My name is Danyelle and I have quite a few disorders but the one that is the most disruptive is Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder or, PMDD. PMDD is an extreme form of PMS, symptoms include thoughts of suicide, extreme irritability, unstoppable crying and more. PMDD symptoms arise 2 weeks before the start of menstruation and last until your period begins. I live in a small town and unfortunately the closest provider that covers PMDD would mean crossing state lines. One day awhile back I had reached a limit. I was struggling. I called a hospital in Massachusetts where a provider took on patients with PMDD. I was then heartbroken to hear my insurance wouldn't cover the cost of even the consolation. Forget about having to drive 2 hours, I definitely do not have the money they were asking for.
My Motivation and Inspiration
I felt very defeated at first. It took me a bit but after coming to terms with this I decided I needed to become a loud advocate for those suffering with PMDD in my own community. I went to my colleges mental health counselor and got permission to have posters hung up around campus. I also connected with IAPMD and have been outspoken on social media. Unfortunately I am no doctor but even emotional support in a community is crucial.
