My Story
I have been an oncology nurse for my entire career, working in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Over the years, I have seen how access to care, insurance challenges, and financial barriers can create devastating consequences for patients and their families. These obstacles not only impact outcomes but also add tremendous stress for patients, their loved ones, and the health care teams who care for them. Recently, I became involved in the myeloma community, where I have been able to focus my energy on advocacy—working to help ensure that patients have the support, resources, and access they need throughout their journey.
My Motivation and Inspiration
My advocacy is deeply motivated by the needs of veterans who have been exposed to toxic substances such as Agent Orange, burn pits, and other yet-to-be-identified chemicals. With the passage of the PACT Act in 2023, veterans deployed to certain areas during specific timeframes are now recognized as being at higher risk of developing multiple myeloma. This important step has made access to treatment and financial resources easier for many, but I believe more can—and must—be done.
I am particularly concerned about early identification and screening for myeloma in these high-risk groups, as timely diagnosis can make a critical difference. To support this, I help lead a support group for veterans with myeloma, providing a community where they can navigate the complexities of the VA health system together.
My passion for this work is also personal. My brother is a veteran who served in one of these high-risk deployment areas, and I want to ensure he—and his fellow service members—have access to the best care and resources available. At a time when VA funding faces ongoing challenges, I am committed to raising awareness, pushing for stronger support systems, and advocating for those who have already sacrificed so much for our country.
