My Story
I believe that we all have the right to lead a life of pure vitality and well-being; it is our birthright.
Through my story, my purpose is to resonate with those who have felt the mental burden of feeling "stuck” and empower them to reclaim their wholeness and embrace their journey of healing and self-discovery towards lasting fulfillment.
I have faced numerous health challenges throughout my life, including obesity, disordered eating, depression, anxiety, addiction, and pregnancy loss. I learned the critical importance of understanding one's genetic makeup and advocating for personalized healthcare. My journey with the MTHFR gene mutation has been a profound and transformative experience, particularly significant as I navigated the complex healthcare system for my mother who recently passed away. In managing my own health and while continuing to seek answers regarding my mother’s passing, I realized a critical gap in medical practice: treating organ-specific symptoms rather than addressing root causes.
This experience has intensified my dedication to health and wellness, motivating me to delve deeper into my genetic blueprint.
Personal Struggles and Discovery
My health challenges have helped me develop strength and resilience. Dealing with obesity throughout most of my life, I developed a skewed perception of true health. I cycled through various restrictive diets, losing weight intermittently only to regain it later.
After graduating from high school, I reached her peak weight of 310 lbs. The year following graduation, I embarked on an exercise regimen and adopted a healthy eating plan, shedding nearly 100 lbs. Unaware of the pitfalls of rapid weight loss, I faced escalating challenges into early adulthood.
The shame of regaining weight, led me to substance abuse, which severely impacted my mental health. In 2005, I lost a pregnancy due to a chromosome abnormality, a deeply tragic event that profoundly altered my life. In 2010, I had another difficult pregnancy, culminating with a medical emergency and an emergency cesarean section from HELLP Syndrome (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet levels). This was a scary time, but am blessed to have a healthy daughter today.
In 2012, after enduring years of unexplained health challenges, countless practitioners, numerous appointments, and fluctuations in weight and overall health, I was finally diagnosed with homozygous MTHFR 1298C gene mutation. This discovery marked the beginning of a significant turning point in my life, offering clarity on the many issues that had troubled me for so long.
MTHFR is a genetic illness that impacts the body’s ability to convert carbohydrates into ATP, the primary energy source for cells. Every human relies on ATP to carry out cellular functions; Normally, one carbohydrate molecule produces 32 ATP molecules through the Krebs or Citric Acid Cycle. In my case, I inherited two defective genes, which means I have severely reduced enzyme efficacy. It puts me at a much higher risk for heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Autoimmune diseases, autism, and other stress related states related to inflammation, mental disorders, and fertility complications.
Over time, I explored the concept of body sovereignty and holistic wellness beyond mere physical appearance. In July 2015, I underwent bariatric surgery—a pivotal decision that posed both physical recovery and emotional adaptation challenges. Immediately post-surgery, adhering to a strict diet and exercise regimen helped me adjust to smaller portions and foods conducive to her altered digestive system. Within a year, she achieved significant weight loss, greatly enhancing her overall health and well-being.
The surgery marked a significant turning point for me. It provided me with the mental fortitude to embark on a second pregnancy post-surgery, despite concerns about weight gain and its impact on my mental well-being. I remained committed to maintaining a healthy weight and prioritizing holistic well-being. It gave me physical resilience and mental strength to confront new challenges, including the pregnancy. Despite initial anxieties about my body's response to pregnancy after surgery, I took on a healthy lifestyle. The outcome was a remarkably healthy pregnancy, during which I managed my weight effectively.
This taught me valuable lessons in resilience and self-advocacy, emphasizing the importance of listening to my body, seeking support when needed, and prioritizing my health in new ways. I revitalized my physical health which drove me to support others facing similar obstacles.
I began reading scientific journals, medical websites, and expert-authored books on genetics and nutrition. Engaging in online forums and support groups for individuals with the MTHFR mutation provided invaluable insights and practical advice on managing the condition. Consulting with Integrative medicine professionals and Naturopathic doctors, including a geneticist and nutritionist, I developed a personalized plan focused on methylated supplements and a diet rich in natural folate - leafy greens, legumes, and citrus fruits, supplemented with L-methylfolate to ensure adequate nutrient intake.
I not only prioritized a balanced diet, but also regular exercise and sufficient sleep to support overall well-being. Mindfulness practices like meditation and yoga became daily routines to manage stress effectively and improve my mental health. I also sought support from a therapist specializing in genetic conditions. Therapy sessions provided a safe space to address emotions, develop coping strategies, and manage depression and anxiety. This holistic approach to mental health significantly improved my quality of life.
Ongoing Challenges
I am still met with disregard or ignorance from those practicing “modern medicine “ in traditional settings. The reality is that most individualized holistic treatment is often very expensive and is not covered by any insurance. This drastically impacts access to individualized care.
Shouldn’t the best care be available to everyone, not just the wealthy individuals or folks that are at their wits end, having to prioritize their health despite the heavy financial burden?
Both myself and my mother confronted substantial health obstacles linked to the MTHFR mutation. For me, it was weight issues, mental health struggles, and pregnancy difficulties. For my mother, it resulted in heart problems and cognitive decline. These shared genetic challenges highlighted the critical need for personalized healthcare approaches to effectively manage the effects of the MTHFR mutation.
I became an advocate for personalized healthcare and emphasized the importance of closely monitoring medications and treatments. The MTHFR gene mutation impedes proper methylation, which plays a vital role in detoxifying the body, synthesizing DNA and RNA, protecting nerves, metabolizing hormones, generating cellular energy, producing neurotransmitters for brain function, and regulating gene expression. With the MTHFR mutation, especially in individuals with the variant CYP2C9, affecting the body’s ability to metabolize certain medications (including blood thinners) can be compromised, leading to an increased risk of toxicity and adverse reactions. None of the 3 hospitals my mother was in near the end of life tested her for the gene.
Conclusion / Lessons Learned
Personalized healthcare is critically important. My mother and I encountered distinct genetic obstacles that necessitated customized treatment strategies. Recognizing the implications of genetic mutations, medication interactions, and their broader physiological effects is essential for making informed healthcare choices. The standardized medical approaches are frequently inadequate, highlighting the necessity for tailored care plans to effectively manage health conditions.
Advocacy plays a vital role in navigating the healthcare system. My and my mother's journey highlighted the necessity of being a proactive and informed advocate. Asking questions, challenging decisions, and seeking second opinions can make a significant difference in the quality of care received. One must be persistent and assertive in ensuring that healthcare providers consider all aspects of a patient's condition.
Furthermore, integrating mental health support is crucial. Seeking therapy, practicing mindfulness, and nurturing a strong support network are essential elements of a holistic approach to health. These exercises taught me resilience and adaptability. Maintaining optimism, adapting to new circumstances, and drawing strength from adversity are vital for navigating obstacles and continuing to advocate effectively for oneself and loved ones.
Call to Action
Genetic testing and personalized healthcare play a crucial role in effective health management and mitigating potential medical complications. Understanding one's genetic profile offers valuable insights into nutrient processing, medication responses, and the management of various health conditions. You can see in my example, that the MTHFR gene mutation significantly impacts energy metabolism and overall health, influencing areas ranging from cardiovascular function to mental well-being. Without genetic testing, underlying issues may go undetected, resulting in ineffective treatments and prolonged suffering. Individuals with severe MTHFR deficiency can experience significant neurological impairments, necessitating long-term care. Brain atrophy and white matter disease are prevalent among affected patients.
Personalized healthcare ensures that treatments and interventions are both effective and safe, moving away from the traditional one-size-fits-all model to a more precise form of medicine. By integrating genetic factors, healthcare providers can create personalized treatment plans that address the root causes of health issues rather than just managing symptoms, leading to improved health outcomes, minimized side effects, and enhanced quality of life.
Educate yourself about your health conditions, understand the implications of your genetic profile, and collaborate closely with healthcare professionals to develop a personalized healthcare plan. Encourage your loved ones to do the same, fostering an informed, proactive approach to healthcare that supports healthier and happier lives.
